Charlie Langton: Did School's 'Naughty Or Nice' Exchange Go Too Far?
A west Michigan teacher was suspended recently after a "naughty or nice" gift exchange turned up presents that were much too "naughty."
It started when students in the Mattawan High School journalism class wanted to have a gift exchange, and the teacher agreed. For some reason, she endorsed the "naught or nice" theme.
Students brought lingerie, candy shaped like genatalia, condoms, and more. The teacher looked at it and said, "'All right, we'll let it go.'"
But parents and administrators weren't ready to let it go. After the kids came home with tales about what happened in class that day, the teacher was suspended for three days.
What was this teacher thinking? Talk Radio 1270 callers had plenty of ideas.
Rob from Canton said, "The thing is, this is what bugs me, you have these teachers who just keep wanting to push the envelope. What she should have done is set some parameters ... I would say 'Let's keep it to a piece of coal, or maybe an 'F' on a paper, something you've done wrong that culturally acceptable in school...Suppose somebody brought the Bible or the Lord's prayer, I guarantee she would have put a stop to it.
"We're always OK with the bad stuff, but when it comes to the good stuff (like the Bible), God forbid we have that... This is why a lot of parents are getting sick of public education."
Jeff said, "Where does this fall in line with reading, writing, arithmetic? -- Is this why our education system is failing?"
