Celebration Of Vets At Parades Around Town

PLYMOUTH (WWJ) - Numerous communities statewide and across the country are paying homage to military men and women on this Memorial Day.

WWJ's Ron Dewey reports that Doug Henker, one of the coordinators of the Plymouth Memorial Day Parade, comes from a long line of veterans.

Henker says veterans organizations are in need of new blood, and it's important to  reach out to those service men and women coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Memorial Day is an opportunity to look at those veterans groups in a new way.

The grand marshal for the Memorial Day parade is Air Force Col. Charles Cone of Northville. Cone first enlisted in 1943 and was in the Navy and Air Force until 1973. He says he has flown just about everything that has wings.

His highlight of being in the military, he says, was always the service to country.

Cone still serves, but in a different capacity, he's still flying high at age 86 as a pilot for 'Angel Flight', providing air transportation for charity and medical reasons.
