Campaign Urges Citizens To Protest Cuts To Medicare & Medicaid
DETROIT (WWJ) - A new campaign called "Care, Not Cuts" has been launched which urges citizens to call their national lawmakers to protest cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.
David LaLumia, President and CEO of Health Care Association of Michigan, says senior citizens who depend on Medicare-financed post acute care will be impacted by the millions of dollars in cuts already approved.
In some instances, says LaLumia, staffing cuts will be the part of the equation:
"We're concerned that quality of care might be compromised ... to some extent, said LaLumia."Impacting the way facilities can plan their therapy; can mobilize their resources and to make sure there's adequate care."
He's also speaking out on behalf of the "Care, Not Cuts" campaign.
"The first of those (cuts) occurred ... March of 2010 when rates were reduced nationwide by $14.6 billion dollars over 10 years. The second year of Medicaid cuts came in July of 2011, when the centers for Medicare and Medicaid services reduced payments to nursing facilities for therapy and rehab services by 11 percent."
