Brothers To Learn Today If They'll Be Freed

DETROIT (WWJ) - Two brothers, whose murder convictions were thrown out, could learn today if they'll be granted freedom for the first time in 25 years.

Thomas and Raymond Highers were granted a motion for a new trial after a judge, last week, threw out murder convictions in the 1987 shooting death of Robert Karey.

It wasn't until a chance encounter on Facebook that things started to work in favor of the Highers. Witnesses who were at the victim's house the night he was shot -- but never went to police out of fear -- came forward.

Lawyers for the brothers will ask the judge to set bond for their client's release. Prosecutors will ask that the pair be kept behind bars until an appeal is heard by a higher court.
