Breastfeeding Moms Get A Boost Of Support During Awareness Month

WATERFORD (WWJ) -  Throughout the day Friday at Waterford Oaks County Park, moms and dads gathered to learn more about the benefits of breastfeeding.

The gathering was part of Oakland County's International Breastfeeding Awareness month activities.

Kathy Forzley, Health Officer and Manager for the Oakland County Health Division, said finding a place to breastfeed your baby away from home can be a big challenge for moms.

"... and, that's part of the support we need to provide mothers. We need to be able to give them a comfortable and safe place to breastfeed. We need to provide support. Not just from families, but from neighbors, friends, co-workers. And, even employers ...", said Forzley.

Forzley said that part of the consideration for breastfeeding moms is the resulting health benefits; not just for baby but also helping mom return to pre-pregnancy weight.

It also helps stem obesity issues for the baby down the road, prevents diabetics I and II as they grown up said Forzley.

Just as important - breastfeeding helps strengthen the bond between mom and baby.

Employers can find out how to set-up an area for breastfeeding moms who've returned to work through the County Health Division's Nurse-On-Call program.
