Breastfeeding Mom Defends Failed Flash Mob
Failed flash mob organizer Mary Napoli of St. Clair Shores sat down with Talk Radio 1270 morning show host Charlie Langton Wednesday to explain her rationale for the event heard round the world -- and defend her right to breastfeed wherever, whenever.
Mary Napoli made headlines when she and a dozen of her Mom friends were ejected from Somerset Collection in Troy after trying to hold a breastfeeding flash mob inside.
Security spotted Napoli just as she started to unbutton and quickly escorted her from Michigan's most upscale shopping center.
"I unbuttoned one button and they were all around me," Napoli told Langton. "They were ready to pounce. They knew we were coming. I thought 'Well, if that's the policy...' But I wanted to make sure it wasn't about the breastfeeding."
Somerset spokesman Edward Nakfoor said security broke up the gathering, not because it involved breastfeeding, but because Somerset doesn't allow demonstrations or protests as "we are private property."
Napoli doesn't buy it.
"I was nursing my child, that was definitely the reason security stopped me," she said during the interview throughout which she breastfed her 22-month-old son Andrew in the studio.
Langton asked if she was worried about breastfeeding offending kids and parents in line to see Santa Claus at the mall.
"Santa Claus was breast fed," Napoli replied.
So is she planning to keep going to make her point that breastfeeding is beautiful and natural, and should be allowed in public places? Probably not.
"Honestly, I was just doing it for something fun, it was no big deal. I just thought it was something fun ... It was just going to be something so small," Napoli said.
