Boy, 5, Critical After SW Mich. Crash

A 5-year-old boy remains in critical condition following a crash in southwest Michigan that killed his younger stepbrother and injured both of his parents.

Michigan State Police say Jayden Everett and Gary and Rikki Cannon, both 28, were taken to a Kalamazoo hospital after their northbound car crossed the center line and crashed into a tree at 1:46 p.m. Sunday in Lockport Township.

Four-year-old Dominic Cannon was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that Gary Cannon, who was driving, is listed in fair condition. Rikki Cannon's condition was not immediately available.

Police said in a statement alcohol and drugs "are believed to be a factor,'' but did not elaborate. Investigators said seat belts and child-restraint seats were being used.

An investigation is ongoing.
