One of the biggest skills that a child or adult can learn is how to swim, and in the Metro Detroit area, there are plenty of options when it comes to finding a class. When selecting a class, it is imperative that the instructors are up to date on all life-saving training. Each of the locations listed meet the highest standards with instructors that will teach each student in a safe and competent manner.

For years, the YMCA has been the place to go for swimming lessons and the Boll Family YMCA in Detroit continues the tradition. Whether you are looking for a class for parents and children to learn together or if an adult or child is learning to swim for the first time, you will find the classes you need. Most classes last for seven sessions, some meeting weekly and in some cases multiple times a week, and instruction ranges from beginning to advanced swimming techniques. Fees for members of the "Y" are $50 while non-members pay a slightly higher rate of $65.

From tots to grandparents, there are swim lessons to be had at the St. Clair Shores Park and Recreation swim classes. As long as the little ones who want to learn are 42 inches tall or more, there is a place waiting for them in the pool. With six levels being offered, ranging from tots hitting the pool for the first time to advance training, there is something for everyone. There are four sessions set for the summer with classes beginning on June 17, July 1, July 15 and July 29. City residents can register on May 13 and 14, and non-residents can begin registering for classes on May 15. Classes for beginners are $35, while those for intermediate swimmers are $40 and for an advanced course it is $50.

At Aqua-Tots, children and adults can find a place that is fun to be at while learning to swim. There are classes beginning with those for moms with their babies and toddlers and up to classes for teens and even adults. With eight levels of instruction, the swimmers can truly reach their full potential. The key to learning to swim at Aqua-Tots is the small size of the classes, with there never being more than four students per class, allowing the instructors to truly give personal attention to each student. There are group classes and private lessons available and prices begin at $78 per month for group classes with a discount given for more than one child per family taking lessons.

With five outdoor pools and a state-of-the-art fitness center at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, the Dearborn Recreation Department offers swim classes not matched by many other communities. Classes offered include beginner, intermediate and advanced levels and are held in two-week-long segments throughout the summer. Start dates depend upon the location with the first 30-minute classes beginning on June 17. Fees for the classes are $50 for city residents and $60 for non-residents. A swim tag required for entry into the city pools must also be purchased and is based on the age of the person and residency, so call for more information.

We all know that gold fish can swim, and at Gold Fish Swim School, children and teens will learn to take to the water like the school's namesake. At Gold Fish, children will receive very personal instruction with there never being more than four students per teacher. Classes range from children as young as four months, where an adult takes part in the class, up to advanced classes for older, more accomplished swimmers. Fees for the 30-minute classes begin at $78 per month for group lessons and up to $182 for private lessons. The fees are based on the students taking one class each week.
