You may have been to Zingerman's Roadhouse or the deli in downtown Kerrytown, but have you been to the Bakehouse? It offers all sorts of scrumptious desserts and has many seasonal treats as well. For summer, Zingerman's offers sweet cream biscuits served with local fresh berries, fresh fruit tarts and Paris brest with strawberries, which includes pate a choux (Choux pastry dough), sliced/filled with vanilla bean pastry cream, strawberries and vanilla bean whipped cream. The Bakehouse also offers traditional banana bread.

Twisted Rooster is known for putting its own spin on foods, as well as using all Michigan-made ingredients. Its motto is "Commit to the Mitt"(en). It has three locations, but the one closest to Detroit is in Belleville; the others are in Chesterfield (near Sterling Heights) and in Grand Rapids. Twisted Rooster has an interesting dessert menu, ranging from peanut butter and jelly tiramisu to candied caramel apple bread pudding - perfect for summer. If you have a big appetite or are with a big group, you can order the ultimate sugar rush ($22.99), which includes the chef's signature and special selections, and serves up to eight people.

Coach Insignia is perched at the top of the Renaissance Center (Ren Cen) and the view is spectacular. The Ren Cen offers valet parking but Coach Insignia will validate your parking up to about $10. On its current dessert list, it offer pinot saffron poached pear with vanilla panna cotta, haroseth honey caramel and pinot jelly as well as Zingerman's sorbet or gelato and strawberry Charlotte (Bavarian creme and balsamic strawberries). Be advised that Coach Insignia is closed on Sundays and does not open for lunch.

Guernsey is well known for its ice cream and dairy products, but it has some desserts that are a bit lighter. It's the perfect place to go in the summertime as there are a lot of outdoor benches and seating areas, but you can also sit inside in the restaurant if the weather isn't great. If you're looking for a fruity summer treat, Guernsey has a traditional banana split, the banana royal (a split banana with hot fudge) and fruit sundaes with your choice of fruit (pineapple, cherry, strawberry or blackberry).

Astoria has two locations, one in Greektown (downtown Detroit) and the other in downtown Royal Oak. It offers a huge selection of pastries year round, as well as a few summer specialties, like its strawberry shortcake and lemon meringue pie. If you're looking for something fruity to try, it also has fruit tarts, key lime pie, apple strudel and both key lime and strawberry cheesecake slices. If you want something with more chocolate that is also fruity, the black forest torte is chocolate cake made with layers of tart cherries and is also topped with cherries. For both locations, street parking is offered nearby.
