Best Places For Vegetarian Chili In Detroit

It's getting cold outside, and there's nothing better than warming up with a bowl of hot chili. If you're a vegetarian though, chili can sometimes be hard to find. Check out this list for the best places for veggie chili in the area.

It's known for its burger menu and also its brunch, but it has an interesting veggie chili dish on the menu too: chili cheese fries ($7.50), topped with either meat or vegetarian chili. You can also just get plain chili fries ($6.50), if you're not a cheese fan. And if you're not into french fries, or you're trying to eat healthier, Honest John's has its "hearty homemade chili," both meat and vegetarian, for $3.25 for a cup or $3.75 for a bowl.

www.sevarestaurant.comSeva has two locations in downtown Detroit and also in Ann Arbor; its Ann Arbor location used to be downtown, but has since moved to Jackson Ave. Seva is known for serving only vegetarian and vegan dishes, and it has a wide selection from which to choose. The chili cheese fries ($10) include french fries with spicy vegan chili sauce, with your choice of cheddar-jack or vegan Daiya cheese. If you go for happy hour (Mon.-Fri., 4-6 p.m.), all appetizers are half-off, and there are also drink specials, such as half-price wine (glass or bottles), half-price draft beer and $1 off all cocktails. Seva also has lunch specials (Mon.-Fri., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), where you can add a cup of soup to a half sandwich or a bowl of soup to any house salad meal.

The hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday only. The restaurant boasts that its house-made veggie chili ($3.50 a cup or $5 a bowl) will please both "veg-heads and meat-eaters alike!," and it has a Tex-Mex flavor to it. There is plenty of parking in the area, including a community lot behind the building, unmetered parking on 12 Mile and municipal lots across 12 Mile (by the Berkley Theater).

The store is open 10 am. to 6 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays only, and it has organic fruits and veggies, bakery goods, homemade soups and sandwiches and non-food items, such as vitamins, hair/skin care products and gluten-free raw juices. All of the soups are made fresh daily. Soups range for $3.50 per cup ($3.25 for non-vegan) to $9.00 for a quart ($8.50 for non-vegan), and all come with fresh bread.
