2nd suspected homicide investigation in 5 months at Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Michigan

A death at Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility, one of the men's prisons in the Michigan Department of Corrections, is under investigation as a suspected homicide — the second such investigation at the facility in less than five months.

Kevin Joseph Kelly, 36, was found unresponsive in his two-person cell on Wednesday evening, an MDOC spokesperson said. The prison staff called EMS, but Kelly was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

Michigan State Police are investigating the death as a suspected homicide, MDOC said. Given the active investigation, the corrections department declined to provide additional details of the circumstances.

Kelly was serving a sentence of two to five years for a 2024 aggravated stalking conviction in Wayne County, state prison records show. He also had previous convictions from Wayne and Oakland County that included larceny in a building and possession of narcotics/cocaine.

Joshua McGehee, 40, was found unresponsive in his cell there on March 27 and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. McGehee was serving up to 25 years in prison after pleading no contest in a Macomb County robbery case.

Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility is in the Western Michigan community of Ionia. It is the newest prison facility within the system, having opened in 2001, and houses men ages 18 and older who are serving state prison terms.
