AZ Tragedy On Minds At Auto Show

The shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is very much on the minds of those attending the start of the North American International Auto Show.

Senator Debbie Stabenow greeted attendees and other well-wishers and other well-wishers in Cobo Center's Michigan Hall to help kick off the auto show.

Stabenow told WWJ's Ron Dewey  that's always part of the job.

"We always are careful, but my job is to be with people and be listening and involved.  And, for me as well as all of my colleagues, we wouldn't do what we do if we didn't care very much about people and want to be around people.  But, it's a challenge," Stabenow said.

Stabenow says Giffords was well liked by fellow lawmakers on either side of the aisle.

"When we look at the fact that a 9-year-old girl and a judge and senior citizens that came out to talk with their member of Congress --- people who just wanted to participate in the process were caught up in this, it is a real tragedy," Stabenaw said.

A moment of silence was held at the NAIAS opening ceremonies to honor those lost in the tragedy.

The auto show will be open to the public Jan. 15-23.
