Autopsy: Detroit Cop Who Died Had Internal Bleeding
DETROIT (AP) - An autopsy found evidence of internal bleeding after a chest tube was removed from a Detroit police officer who was expected to survive a shooting.
MLive.com says it obtained the autopsy report on Sgt. Ken Steil who died on Sept. 17, days after being shot in the shoulder by a crime suspect. The death shocked his family and other officers because Steil was described as upbeat and preparing to go home.
The autopsy says Steil "suffered another bleeding episode into the right chest cavity" after the tube was removed at St. John Hospital. The chest tube was placed to drain fluids. He died a day after it was removed.
Dr. Carl Schmidt declined to comment on the autopsy because of upcoming court hearings. Steil's death is listed as a homicide.
