(CBS DETROIT) - While there are currently no Michelin star restaurants in Detroit, the guide is once again expanding beyond New York and California, and another city is now home to Michelin-starred restaurants.

The five restaurants in Atlanta, Georgia, were each awarded one Michelin star during a ceremony Tuesday evening, according to the Michelin Guide website.

The restaurants that received a star in the new guide include Atlas, Bacchanalia, Hayakawa, Lazy Betty and Mujō.

Two restaurants also received a Green Star, which highlights establishments that are eco-friendly and sustainable. This could mean the restaurant works directly with local farmers, fishermen, and growers, uses seasonal produce, has a food waste management system, and more.

The Chastain was awarded a Green Star, and Bacchanalia received a Green Star alongside its Michelin star.

In addition, 10 Atlanta restaurants received Bib Gourmand, which is a designation that a restaurant serves good food at moderate prices.

At the ceremony, the following awards were also given out:

  • Jason Furst of BoccaLupo won Exceptional Cocktail
  • Neal McCarthy of Miller Union took top honors for Service
  • Juan Fernando Cortés of The Chastain was awarded the Sommelier honor
  • Jarrett Stieber of Little Bear was given the Young Chef award

More about the Michelin star

Michelin stars are awarded to restaurants with excellent cooking based on the factors of quality of ingredients, the harmony of flavors, the mastery of techniques, the personality of the chef expressed through the food and consistency.

Restaurants can request to be considered for a Michelin star, and readers can recommend restaurants. In addition, restaurants that have already received stars are re-evaluated each year.

According to the Michelin Guide website, anonymous inspectors judge each restaurant, and they are all full-time employees who are former restaurant and hospitality professionals.
