American Arab Chamber of Commerce fires executive director amid investigation into unaccounted funds

The American Arab Chamber of Commerce has terminated its executive director, Bilal Hammoud, after discovering funds that could not be accounted for.

The chamber says the former director was fired, effective immediately, and that it has taken steps to secure its accounts and prevent further loss.

A source familiar with the matter tells CBS News Detroit that the amount involved is nearly $1 million and that the money never reached the organization. The source says that the discrepancy sparked the investigation.

The chamber has hired law firm Warner Norcross + Judd to conduct an independent external investigation into what happened. The organization says its board and leadership are directly involved and that the chamber is cooperating with authorities.

"We are taking these steps because the trust of our members, partners, and the businesses we serve is the foundation of everything we do," chairman Ahmad Chebbani said in a statement. "We are committed to getting this right and to being transparent with the community we serve."

The chamber has not said exactly where the money came from or where it was supposed to go. It also has not publicly accused Hammoud of embezzlement or fraud.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation declined to comment on the investigation.

Hammoud had served as the chamber's executive director for about two and a half years, taking over the position in 2024. He previously ran for state representative in Michigan's 15th House district in 2022.

The chamber says its programs and services will continue as usual, with new safeguards now in place. It says it will provide a full accounting to its members, board and partners once the investigation is complete.

CBS News Detroit contacted Hammoud and is awaiting a response.
