50th Anniversary Of Michigan's Last Constitutional Convention
LANSING (WWJ) - A celebration of sorts for the 50th anniversary of the last Michigan Constitutional Convention.
WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick spoke with former Detroit senator Charlie Youngblood who says there have been a lot of changes since the last constitutional convention in Michigan.
Youngblood says the main change he has seen over the years is: "Compromise, if I disagree with you, lets sit down and talk about it. Today, unfortunately everybody is opinionated and sticks to their opinion whether they are right or wrong, they don't listen to the other side."
"Politics is ... I'm glad I'm not in it anymore," added Youngblood.
Some contend that if Michigan residents want real reform in state government, the only way to truly do it is to hold a state constitutional convention.
Originally there we 144 members how many are left?
"We think twenty but we're not 100 percent sure because there are a couple that we can't determine their status or get in touch with them," said Lansing delegate Eugene Wanger. "Well, we're happy that there are as many remaining."
Some of the delegates that came out of the 1961-62 Michigan Constitutional Convention were George Romney, John Hannah, and Dick Austin.
