LYON TWP. (WWJ) - A Lyon Township man is missing nearly half a million dollars in cash, gold and silver after a break in at his home.
The victim told Oakland County sheriff's deputies that when he returned from the casino around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, his home and safe had been broken into. The safe was missing $400,000 worth of cash, gold and silver bars, and a diamond ring. Nothing else was reported missing from the house, located in the 19800 block of 8 Mile Road.
Deputies responded to the home and discovered that the door wall had been pried open. Once inside, it appears the thieves went straight for the safe in the basement. The suspects reportedly used power tools to open the safe and they wore gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints behind.
The homeowner told police he does have a security system but forgot to activate his alarm prior to leaving for the night. The home's video surveillance, however, was recording at the time. Cameras captured images of two suspects, both wearing hooded sweatshirts and with their faces covered.
Police believe the suspects are familiar with the victim. Both are believed to be Caucasian or light-skinned males.
