26-Year-Old Milford Man In Pajamas Follows 'Pokemon Go' Straight To Jail
MILFORD (WWJ) -- A local Pokemon Go player played himself right into jail in Milford this week.
Milford police chief Thomas Lindberg said the 26-year-old man unknowingly followed the game's map right to the police station while on his bike Thursday morning-- which would have been OK had he not had a warrant out for his arrest.
"We got him off his bike, he was in his pajamas still," Lindberg told WWJ Newsradio 950's Chrystal Knight. "They took him into custody on the warrant without incident."
The warrant was issued for failure to appear in court and a breaking and entering charge. The man was arraigned and released on personal bond.
"He was specifically riding his bike there because he knew that in the flag pole in front of our building there's a character there that he needed for his game," Lindberg said. "And our building is actually designated as a 'gym' and I really don't know -- and don't want to know -- exactly what that is."
Lindberg said that officers immediately recognized the man as they have dealt with him on multiple occasions.
"He went directly to jail and did not pass go," Lingberg said.
In addition to distraction concerns, Lindberg says he just learned that many Pokemon Go users are opening up online chat rooms that can pose a danger to some players.
"People could potentially get guided to places where they shouldn't go," Lindberg said. "If someone says 'hey, meet behind the building, you have to go way in the back.'"
Pokemon Go -- a mobile game that has taken the nation by storm -- requires players to walk around in the real world to "capture" characters from the long-running video game series at different locations, such as parks and buildings.
