23 New Detroit Firefighters Sworn In
DETROIT (WWJ) - Some long-awaited new blood has been inducted into the Detroit Fire Department. In a ceremony, Tuesday, 23 firefighters were sworn following their probationary year.
WWJ Newsradio 950 Ron Dewey spoke with Robert Massey, who comes from a line of Detroit firefighters.
"It's more than just a job... it really takes more. We have to do more for the city, more for the community," he said.
"The guys that trained me, really, you know, felt like family. It really felt like a family more than a job. And they really was concerned about my safety, making it back home. They really stressed that, so I really learned a lot from these guys," Massey said.
Detroit Mayor Dave Bing called the inductees partners in bringing back the city. "They're needed because we have an aging population in our fire department," Bing said.
This is the first new class in four years.
