Man killed in crash at Seven Mile and Southfield was driving over 90 mph, police say
A Chevrolet Trax driver was speeding on the Southfield Freeway at over 90 mph just before crashing into a Chrysler 300 about 2:15 a.m. Thursday in West Detroit, the Michigan State Police said.
The Chevrolet driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police, Metro North post, were on patrol on Southfield Freeway when they noticed the silver Chevrolet approaching at a high rate of speed in the center and left lanes. The Chevrolet driver passed the patrol car at over 90 mph, "and continued to accelerate," police said.
Troopers tried to catch up to the Chevrolet as it continued southbound on Southfield. The driver then got off on Seven Mile Road, where police activated the patrol car's emergency lights and siren at the Seven Mile Road ramp.
The Chevrolet then rear-ended the Chrysler, which was also southbound on Southfield, while trying to turn east onto Seven Mile Road.
Troopers said they checked on both drivers. The Chrysler driver did not have any visible injuries. The Chevrolet driver was trapped in his SUV and was pronounced dead.
Officers from the Detroit Police Department arrived on the scene and investigated the crash.
Travel lanes in that area were closed until shortly after 6 a.m. to allow for on-site investigation and cleanup. The investigation continues.
"We continue to remind drivers that risky driving behaviors such as excessive speed, following too closely and distracted driving lead to preventable crashes," MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said.
