Women As Primary Breadwinner Growing Across U.S.

DENVER (CBS4)- Women are making more money than their counterparts. In fact they are the primary breadwinners in an increasing number of households in the U.S.

A new study suggests there are concerns that come with the changing trend.

According to a new Pew Research study wives earn more than their husbands in one out of four homes.

Changes in the economy are contributing to the trend. Male-dominated industries such as construction and manufacturing have seen layoffs. That puts more pressure on women to make up the lost family income.

In households with children, the study suggests 40 percent of the women are the primary earner.

Three out of four people surveyed said working mothers make it harder for families to raise children.

But others believe working mothers are good examples for their children.

As more women enter the workforce trends within companies are changing with some adopting flexible work schedules and virtual offices.
