Winter Conditions Close All Lanes Of I-70 East Of Aurora
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- The Colorado Department of Transportation closed all lanes of Interstate 70 east of Aurora on Wednesday afternoon because of adverse winter driving conditions.
CDOT closed both directions of I-70 from Airpark Road to Goodland, Kansas just after 1 p.m. Wednesday. That's a total of 175 miles of I-70.
Blowing snow and poor visibility were cited as the reasons behind the road closure.
Copter4 flew over I-70 at the closure where the backup stretched miles with semis and travelers waiting to exit at Airpark Road.
Westbound I-70 from Limon was reopened later in the afternoon.
CDOT said they are monitoring the conditions and if the storm moves out quickly they hope to reopen I-70 Wednesday night.
U.S. 40 and Highway 287 on the Eastern Plains were also closed on Wednesday and remained closed into the evening.
