Wildfire Near Walsenburg Is 50 Percent Contained
WALSENBURG, Colo. (AP) — Firefighters are working to build more containment lines around the nearly 21-square-mile wildfire burning near Walsenburg.
Crews were focusing on building hand line on the western edge of the fire on Monday. Firefighters were able to conduct a burnout on the fire on Sunday to help stop the spread of the blaze, which was 50 percent contained Monday evening.
Some residents were allowed to return home over the weekend, but others are still under evacuation orders because of the East Peak Fire.
The fire was started by lightning Wednesday. Full containment is expected by the beginning of next week.
