Train Offers Gourmet Dining, Spectacular Views
The Royal Gorge Train offers one of the most scenic railroad adventures in Colorado. The train hugs the edge of the Arkansas River offering passengers spectacular views of the river.
Returning passengers have plenty of advice for newcomers -- it mostly focuses on seating and making sure you get a spot in the dining care with the dome. It offers a chance to enjoy a meal as the scenery rolls by.
The observation dome cars are from the 1950s and are a recent addition to the train. The addition of the cars means the railroad can carry more passengers on each trip.
And it's not prepackaged food brought on board the train that's served. Almost everything is cooked on board under the careful eye of executive chef Jeff McGlothin.
"We do seven days a week, at least three times a day; sometimes four if it's a dinner night," said McGlothin.
There are three levels of food, regular coach service with concessions, a bar and grill and gourmet dining.
Passengers said the train ride gives them a new perspective of the Royal Gorge. "We were on top off the bridge looking down a year or two ago, and we tried to see it from a different perspective."
Passengers are treated to more than just rushing water and rocks; they need to keep an eye out for wildlife as well. That included a pair of bald eagles named "Royal" and "George" on a recent trip.
The Royal Gorge train is again offering its popular "Winemaker's Dinner Trains," feature Colorado wineries as well as "murder mystery" nights on the train.
