Thieves Targeting Construction Sites In Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Thousands of dollars worth of construction equipment has been stolen from construction sites in Douglas County over the past few weeks.

Thieves have looted 16 different construction sites in Castle Rock and Lone Tree since January. Thousands of dollars worth of tools, copper and building materials have been stolen.

"One spray pump is worth $4,000. Take two pumps, a load of copper and you've got yourself an $8,000 or $9,000 load," said victim Larry Tillman.

Criminals recently struck Tillman's construction site.

"They stole a bunch of the electrician stuff, a couple of painters lost their paint sprayers, a lot of copper," he said.

Tillman feels lack of security and surveillance makes construction sites easy targets.

"I could be loading stuff up right no. Nobody would even question it," said Tillman.

Douglas County Undersheriff Tony Spurlock said there are no leads and no suspect descriptions but the cases are believed to be connected. According to him, the robbers hit the sites just as the workers leave.

"These folks are backing up trucks and they are stealing lots and lots of equipment. Big rolls of copper, huge components and they are stealing them," said Spurlock.

With more construction projects coming up, workers like Ben Adleman think the criminals could end up stealing more than just supplies.

"It's the way we make our livelihood. They just come in here and take our tools and we can't make a living," said Adlemen.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information on the thefts to contact them.
