Police rushed to the Wells Fargo bank at 999 South Sable Boulevard just before 8 a.m. after a Hispanic male held up an armored truck outside the bank. Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and a Brinks security guard who was with the truck.

The security guard was not hurt in the shooting but the suspect suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect ran to a nearby apartment complex while trailing blood. Officers followed his blood trail and found him. He surrendered to police and was rushed to the hospital.

Authorities are not sure who fired first.

"The investigation is going to be turned over to Safe Streets and they're asking any witnesses with information to contact Crime Stoppers," said Aurora Police spokeswoman Diana Cooley.

No one was inside the bank at the time because the bank had not yet opened for business. Investigators are hoping to talk to witnesses and ask that they call Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867).

The bank reopened after the investigation.

The suspect has not been identified.

The Department of Justice said armored truck robberies are rare with 28 across the U.S. in the past year.
