Report: El Paso County Sheriff Exchanged Endorsement For Favors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- An independent investigator says a report shows that El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa exchanged favors for an endorsement.

According to the report, Maketa offered an endorsement to a candidate for sheriff in exchange for personal favors.

The independent investigator also said the report shows Maketa mishandled internal affair investigations and had inappropriate relationships with three women in his department.

The findings were brought to the attention of the El Paso County Commissioners.

"I hasten to add that this was the first report of any kind, formal or informal, of complaints brought to the attention of this Board of County Commissioners," said Ray Deeny with the Sherman and Howard Law Firm.

The contents of the report have been forwarded to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, according to The Gazette.

Maketa is embroiled in scandal over several alleged affairs with subordinates. He has admitted what he called "inappropriate behavior," but he has refused to step down. He could only be removed from office through a recall.
