Police Say Broomfield Teens Were Trying To Make Hallucinogen
BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4) - Two Broomfield teenagers are suspected of running a small drug operation near an elementary school.
Police were alerted to the illegal activity on Thursday after a 16-year-old was caught stealing household items from a King Soopers in the 12,000 block of Sheridan Boulevard.
"A turkey baster and some containers. There was a question as to why a 16-year-old would take those particular items," said Jim Gerhardt with the North Metro Drug Task Force.
Police said that led them to check out a home on the 200 block of Flint Way. They said they found evidence the teen and a friend -- Kyle Clouse, 18 -- had already tried making a drug called Dimethyltryptamine at the home and were apparently going to try again with the items they had planned to steal.
"It's not something we've dealt with before or seen before," Gerhardt said.
Authorities say DMT is a hallucinogen similiar to LSD or ecstasy and that it is a "schedule 1 controlled substance."
"It looks like when you manufacture this particular drug you lace it with marijuana and smoke it, so you are getting the high of marijuana and a hallucinogen effect," Gerhardt said.
Police said they are particularly concerned that the operation was going on close to Emerald Elementary School.
They said that in their search they didn't find any finished product of the drug. They said they aren't sure if the drug was for them, for friends or if they planned to sell it.
Clouse and the 16-year-old tentatively face charges of manufacturing a controlled substance.
