National Running Day Encourages Everyone To Go For A Run
DENVER (CBS) The nation will be celebrating running on Wednesday, June 3rd. It's National Running Day, and running clubs and stores across the nation will be holding fun runs.
"It's a way to really embrace running either on your own or with a group at a running store, or a good time to sign up for a race. It's really just a celebration of running," said Brian Metzler, the editor of Competitor Magazine.
There is a free fun run at the Runner's Roost in Cherry Creek North at 6pm. Runners can do a 2 mile or 5 mile course along the Cherry Creek Trail. Organizers are encouraging runners of all skill levels to come out for the fun run. In the last 10 years, running has become popular among people of all exercise levels.
"Now running is accessible to everybody, whether you're training for a marathon or just getting out the door to do your first 5K, or you just want to run and walk a little bit. It's really accessible as a base level fitness for everybody," Metzler explained.
Experts say that Americans should get at least 30-minutes of exercise a day. Running is a great way to meet that goal.
"Running adds another level of fitness, cardio fitness, makes your legs stronger and works a lot of different muscle groups," Metzler told CBS4.
Early June is a great time to set a goal for a fall race. The Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon & 1/2 is Sunday, Oct. 18, and by setting a race goal now, you have plenty of time to train. Organizers of the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon & 1/2 will be offering registration discounts on National Running Day.
