CRAIG, Colo. (AP) - Monday is the last day to submit comments on the Environmental Protection Agency's plan to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions.
The plan to cut emissions by 30 percent by 2030 attracted crowds to regional hearings this summer, including Denver. They included supporters as well as those worried about how the proposal, intended to curb global warming, could impact coal mines and coal-fired power plants.
EPA Region 8 Administrator Shaun McGrath traveled to northwestern Colorado in September at the invitation of officials concerned about how the proposal would hurt their coal-dependent economy. The Craig Daily Press reports he told about 500 residents in September that the EPA doesn't want to "shut down" the coal industry.
The EPA previously extended the comment period but still plans to finalize the rules by next summer.
