Mejia Concedes In 1st Round Of Denver Mayor'

DENVER (AP) -- Denver mayoral candidate James Mejia has conceded defeat.

Mejia's announcement Thursday officially sets the stage for a June 7 showdown between former Colorado Sen. Chris Romer and Denver City Councilman Michael Hancock.

Romer finished first in voting Tuesday with 28.5 percent, followed by Hancock at 27 percent. Mejia finished with 25.7 percent of the vote.

Mejia says he called Hancock Wednesday after verifying that all the votes were counted and congratulated him on making the runoff. In conceding, Mejia told supporters he was humbled by their support and thanked them for helping him nearly make next month's runoff.
