Man Charged With Stealing From Deputy's Home In Superior

DENVER (CBS4) - Police made an arrest this week in the burglary of a deputy's home in Boulder County.

Investigators say Nicholas McKibben, 24, broke into the deputy's home in Superior. They arrested him after raiding his Denver home on the 3700 block of Dexter Court.

The theft happened in early December. Two handguns, a police radio, badges, a taser and computers were taken.

Sheriff's spokesman Cmdr. Rick Brough said they were concerned after the thefts specifically by what types of items were taken.

"When we lose those types of items we get very concerned about police impersonators," Brough said.

Authorities said a tip led them to McKibben.

McKibben's neighbor told CBS4 he was a former military police officer in the Army and that he was studying criminal justice.

"He had a lot going for him. He was in school on the GI bill. He didn't need to steal," Scott Liva said. "I thought he was a very straightforward person. He was always honest with me, and I just never suspected anything like this would happen."

So far it's not clear what the relationship was between McKibben and the deputy, but they apparently knew each other.

"It turns out the person who was arrested had been at the residence before," Brough said.

McKibben remained in the Boulder County Jail Wednesday night and faces tentative felony charges of second degree burglary and theft.

Officials said they didn't recover all of the stolen items in the case from McKibben's house. They said they are still trying to locate a gun.

Police said there is a high probability McKibben was involved in other burglaries in the Denver area.
