La Plata County Picked For Cancer Study

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - The American Cancer Society is planning to study the cancer rates of La Plata County residents because of the area's uranium mining history.

Accounts of high rates of cancer in La Plata County abound, but statistics gathered by the Colorado Department of Health and Environment are conflicting.

According to the Durango Herald, La Plata County cancer rates were similar to or slightly lower than state rates. Skin cancer and prostate cancer were higher than the state rate.

Participants will be followed for 30 years through mail-in reports to determine whether there is any relationship to cancer.
