Green Thumbs Head To Denver Botanic Gardens For Annual Plant Sale
DENVER (CBS4) - Mother's Day is the traditional kick-off to the planting season in Colorado. It's also the weekend gardeners and plant lovers flock to the Denver Botanic Gardens for the annual plant sale.
The sale is chance for gardeners not only to buy plants appropriate for Colorado but to get some advice for the state's experts, the staff at the gardens.
And it's advice Michael Bone, the curator of the Steppe Collection.
"It's exciting for me when people get excited about something that I just love doing and doing and I'm passionate about. It's just a festival atmosphere and a lot of fun," Bone said.
The plants are divided into 14 divisions or specialized collections of plants.
"Some for water-smart gardening, Plant Select is here. We have fruits and vegetables, annuals, perennials, herbs, rock garden plants so we've got a lot of different divisions here," said Bone.
"One section here is the kind of weird, unusual things from our collections that we're able to grow and share with the public."
It's the people who want to get their hands on those unusual plants that are usually first in line Friday morning.
Bone is happy to share his knowledge of his specialty.
"Steppes are short-grassed prairies around the world so most habitats that are dry enough to not sustain forest growth," he explained. "Denver is one of the great classic steppe regions of the world."
From those short grasses to flowers that will have your garden blooming in color all summer, the Botanic Gardens Plant Sale is sure to have just what you need.
It is open again Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Denver Botanic Gardens at 10th & York.
