Gov. Hickenlooper Signs Colorado Budget Plan

DENVER (AP) - Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper signed Colorado's budget for next year and praised both parties for collaborating.

Hickenlooper was surrounded by the state's budget writers Monday as he signed the budget. It includes a $7.4 billion general fund plan for the fiscal year that starts in July.

The improving economy means that next year's budget includes some $100 million for a property tax break for seniors. And it's the first year in three years that K-12 schools won't see a budget cut from the state.

Education is the single largest portion of the budget.

Hickenlooper noted that 86 out of 100 lawmakers voted for the budget and says that's a big accomplishment considering Democrats control the Senate and Republicans the House.
