Fire Tears Through BBQ Restaurant In Arvada

ARVADA, Colo. (CBS) - Firefighters battled a fierce fire at Bennett's BBQ in Arvada Monday morning.

The fire started at the restaurant, located at 52nd and Wadsworth, in the early morning hours. Someone passing by the business and called police about 2:15 a.m.

The roof was mostly destroyed by the fire, and firefighters said heat, smoke and flames did extensive damage to the inside of the business.

A holiday party took place at the restaurant on Sunday night, and that helped firefighters in their decision not to try to make a dangerous attempt to look for people inside the burning building.

"We went defensive right away on this because we knew with the time of day there wasn't anybody inside. We actually knew that they had closed early for a holiday party so there was even less likelihood of somebody hanging around here," said Arvada Fire Department spokesman Scott Pribble. "Plus with the amount of fire we had up over the firefighters' heads up in the attic space, we knew that that was a very dangerous situation for our firefighters."

Authorities said no one was hurt in the fire.

52nd Avenue was closed for about three hours while firefighters battled the blaze.

So far there's no word on what started the fire.
