DENVER (CBS4)- A new program is helping Denver Public Schools and charter schools hire more minority teachers. The goal is to make the teaching ranks better reflect the diverse student population.
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock has teamed up with DPS, six charter school networks and several foundations for "Make Your Mark Denver."
The citywide initiative focuses on diversifying the workforce by recruiting and retaining educators of color.
"It lets me shed my information, my knowledge, onto my students and let them know that based on the color of your skin or your ethnicity, that should not deter from accomplishing your dreams," said teaching student Santoya Baxter.
Interested and qualified teachers visited schools on Friday and met with Hancock and the DPS superintendent.
