Snowstorm Creates Dangerous Road Conditions In Parts Of Colorado

SILVERTHORNE, Colo. (CBS4) - Road conditions remained dangerous in many parts of the Interstate 70 mountain corridor on Thursday as a snowstorm hits Colorado's Rocky Mountains. A 20-vehicle crash involving semis kept both directions of I-70 closed near Evergreen for a couple of hours.

The multi-car crash was in an area with lanes that appeared snow packed. No one was injured that crash.

Authorities had to close parts of the highway between the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail due to that and other crashes.

At noon CBS4's Matt Kroschel found snow quickly accumulating at the western entrance to the Eisenhower and Johnson Tunnels.

Few vehicles were passing through the tunnel in the eastbound lanes of I-70 at that time, and the westbound lanes were closed from the tunnel down to Silverthorne at that time.

CBS4 meteorologist Ashton Altieri predicts the snow will continue accumulating in the mountains into the evening.

The storm is good news for ski areas, several of which have been forced to push back their opening dates as they wait for significant mountain snowfall.
