DA: Suspect In Officer-Involved Shooting Confessed, Bond Set At $550,000

DENVER (CBS4)- Denver's District Attorney said that the man accused of shooting a Denver police officer multiple times confessed to the shooting.

Jason Wood made his first court appearance on Friday morning.

Denver Police Officer Tony Lopez Jr. was injured when he pulled over Wood during a routine traffic stop near the intersection of N. Federal Boulevard and West Clyde Place on Tuesday. Police say Wood started firing at Lopez, seriously injuring him. Lopez was scheduled to undergo his third surgery on Friday.

His family said Friday's surgery was expected to be invasive and they continue to pray for a quick recovery.

Wood, 36, appeared before a judge on Friday, limping into court presumably because of the injury to his ankle suffered in the shooting. Denver DA Mitch Morrissey wanted $1 million bond but the judge handed down $550,000 bond.

Morrissey also said in court that Wood confessed to the shooting and that he is considered a flight risk because he has failed to show up to court in the past. He also has a long and violent criminal history.

Wood remained in custody for investigation of criminal attempted murder in the first degree of a peace officer and investigation of robbery. He is also being held on an outstanding warrant for robbery. Official charges are expected to be filed next week.

Another person of interest in the case, Melinda Espinoza, turned herself into police and remained in custody on Thursday on an unrelated charge.
