Crews Break Ground On New Fire Station Near DIA

DENVER (CBS4) - Crews broke ground on new fire station in Denver on Tuesday morning.

Denver Fire Station 35 will be located at 25365 East 75th Avenue. It's near Jackson Gap and 75th Avenue and off Pena Boulevard, near Denver International Airport.

The new station will help firefighters get to areas that are farther away from the airfield.

Fire officials released the following details about the effort:

- This will be the first station on airport property located off the airfield and will enhance response times to areas south of the terminal including public areas such as Federal Aviation Administration's radar control center, cargo, Peña Boulevard to E-470 and ¼ mile in either direction on E-470, the Final Approach cell phone wait lot, the south campus and the hotel and transit center.

- The Denver Fire Department provides fire and rescue services to the employees, visitors and passengers at DIA. The airport is a city by itself with containment fuel systems, massive hanger/commercial facilities, complex underground transportation system and miles of highway response with potential emergencies to include aircraft fire, fuel and hazardous spills, bio-chemical threats and medical emergencies.

- Currently, there are four fire stations staffed with a total of 25 firefighters on duty 24/7 who are certified in Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting. Equipment includes seven aircraft crash rescue vehicles each carrying 4,500 gallons of water, 600 gallons of AFFF firefighting foam, and 500 lbs. of dry chemical extinguishing agent; a structural engine, a structural truck, two low profile vehicles, a special operations apparatus, two air stairs vehicles and a snow cat.

- In order to ensure the highest quality of emergency readiness, DFD firefighters supporting emergency response services at DIA participate in continuous training programs to be able to handle dynamic emergency situations and potential hazards at the airport.
