Colorado Sex Offender Arrested In West Virginia For Failure To Register
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - The U.S. Marshals Service says a man who served a prison term in Colorado on a sex offense is being held in West Virginia for failure to register as a sex offender.
The Marshals Service and West Virginia State Police say 54-year-old Daniel Varnes was arrested this month in Huntington, where he had relocated after completing a prison term.
Authorities said Varnes was sentenced to 12 years in prison on a 2001 conviction of sexual assault by a person in a position of trust. He was convicted in Jefferson County, Colorado.
As part of his sentence, he was required to register as a sex offender for life.
Officials said he will be prosecuted on federal charges.
