Driver Crashes Through Barricades, Ends Up In Sinkhole In Denver

DENVER (CBS4) - A Denver man on his way to work is kicking himself after making a mistake while driving during his morning commute and crashing into a sinkhole. The water main break that caused the hole in the street is located at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Cherry Street.

Frank Ross was making his daily drive to work on East Colfax when something happened and he ended up in the hole.

"Somehow or another, I went through the barricade. When I went through the barricade, I heard all these people honking at me and now I'm in a hole," said Ross.

Ross said he's glad he wasn't hurt and no one else was in the Thursday morning crash.

"The car can get replaced. Lives cannot get replaced. I just feel like an idiot because of what I did, that's it," Ross told CBS4.

A Denver Water spokesman says there was no one in the immediate area as Ross drove around the barricades. No one was hurt.

"I'm nervous because of what happened but just glad nobody got killed. Because one of those workers could have been down in that hole and I could've killed him," said Ross.

Crews had to take a break from repairing the water main break to pull out the vehicle. They are expected to be working all day Thursday on repairs.

Denver Water says its a reminder to all drivers to yield to barricades and traffic signs.
