Burglars Kick Down Doors In Highlands Ranch

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Highlands Ranch are searching for thieves who have been forcing their way into homes and taking the most expensive things they can find.

On Friday afternoon the burglar, or burglars, kicked in the door of an apartment near C-470 and Colorado. On the same afternoon, two miles away, another apartment was also burglarized after having its door kicked in.

"When we have two cases on the same day that close, it brings a little concern to us," said Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Teller.

Police are looking into a connection between the break-ins, but have no leads so far. They have increased patrols in the areas where the crimes took place.

Several residents told CBS4 they are shocked by the crimes.

"It's shocking and it's very disappointing because I've felt very safe here," said resident Shirley Segalis. "I wouldn't think this would happen in Highlands Ranch, but, like they say, it happens anywhere at any time."

One victim was too shaken up to talk on camera about what happened, but she allowed a CBS4 crew to shoot video of her shattered door frame.

She says she had bolted her door and had only been away for a few hours when the robbery took place. She said the thieves escaped with a big screen TV, a computer, jewelery and money.

She believes the burglars had been watching her.

"In a lot of these cases the suspects will case the homes and find out who's there and who's not and target those homes," Teller said.

Police recommend making sure the deadbolt on your door is securely in place. They also suggested that adding an alarm system is worth considering.

Anyone who has any information that might be helpful to police in their case is asked to call the Douglas County Sheriff's office at (303) 660-7505.
