Army Helicopters Plan To Train West Of Canon City

CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) - The Army plans to have Fort Carson helicopters practice high-altitude operations on public land west of Canon City this fall.

The federal Bureau of Land Management said Wednesday the Army expects to use five landing zones in Fremont County from mid-October through December. The Army says pilots from the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade are training to deploy to Afghanistan this year.

Three of the sites are near Twin Mountain 5 to 8 miles northwest of Canon City. Two are near Jack Hall Mountain 30 miles west of Canon City. Not all would be in use the entire time.

The BLM says the operations are expected to have little or no ground impact on the landing sites or neighboring property owners.

The BLM is reviewing an Army proposal for longer-term training.
