6th Helicopter Requested At Wildfire In Southwest Colorado
PARADOX, Colo. (AP) - Fire managers have requested an additional helicopter to help fight a nine-square-mile wildfire in southwestern Colorado near the Utah border.
Rita Baysinger of the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center says the helicopter is flying Wednesday to battle flames in a steep and rugged area of the fire.
An additional 150 firefighters and five other helicopters are battling the blaze. It is 50 percent contained despite increasing more than 600 acres overnight.
Fire information officer David Eaker says no structures are threatened. Crews are working to get ahead of high winds expected next weekend.
A second fire grew by 450 acres overnight. It scorched more than 4.6 square miles and is threatening 40 structures.
The fire is 200 miles southwest of Denver near Pagosa Springs. It remains at zero containment.
