3 Pit Bulls Break Into Home, Attack German Shepard

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - Investigators are looking for the owner of three pit bulls that were shot dead by a homeowner who said he was trying to protect his own dog.

Springer, an 8 year old German Shepard, is recovering after suffering a brutal night on Friday.

"We just heard all the dogs going crazy, they were just barking and screaming and going insane," said neighbor Richelle Simpson.

She said three pit bulls broke through a fence that was already damaged, and used a doggie door to get inside the garage, then attack Springer.

"It's crazy that his big dog just totally got totally ganged up on," said Simpson.

The commotion at about 1:30 in the morning awakened the German Shepard's owner.  He stopped the attack by shooting and killing the three pit bulls.

"I don't blame him for doing what he did, I probably would have done the same thing if they had broken into my house and were attacking my dog," said neighbor Christie Clarke.

Simpson said of the pit bulls, "They saw a big dog, that was probably barking at them because that's what he does, he barks at everything so they're probably trying to protect themselves and be, sadly, aggressive to where this sad story happened."

Springer's owner declined to comment. It is unknown who owned the pit bulls.

"I hope they find out whose dogs it was and hope they let him know that like, well if it is his dogs, well sorry that they're dead and everything, that they attacked him. But I hope our neighbor gets some type of compensation for all of the trouble, especially for his dog getting hurt really bad," said Simpson.

Those pit bulls did not have dog tags or microchips, and the investigation is still ongoing.
