Troopers told CBS4 they are investigating whether the driver of the Jeep Liberty was intoxicated while driving southbound in the northbound HOV Lanes, not from alcohol but possibly drugs.

The crash happened at 12:41 p.m. in the HOV Lanes at I-25 and 62nd Avenue, just six minutes after police were alerted to a wrong-way driver. By the time officers arrived, the crash had already happened.

Two people were rushed to Denver Health Medical Center with serious injuries. State troopers said the injured included the driver from each vehicle. A woman was driving the Jeep and a man was driving the sedan.

Copter4 flew over the crash scene that involved at least two vehicles. The northbound HOV Lanes were closed for several hours during accident clean up and investigation. Those lanes reopened at 4:20 p.m.

The HOV Lanes were switched from southbound to northbound at midday.

Officers are investigating how the driver of the Jeep was able to enter the HOV Lanes going the wrong way since all the entries have gates that block the lanes to traffic going the wrong way.
