The story of a Field Museum scientist and a deadly snakebite

On Sept. 26, 1957, Field Museum herpetologist Karl Patterson Schmidt was bitten by a snake he had been asked to identify. Schmidt did not seek out medical attention, but kept a meticulous diary of his symptoms. He died the next day. Field Museum herpetologist Sara Ruane explains exactly what happened and why.
