Charlie Tilson Needs Surgery On Torn Hamstring, Is Out For Season

(CBS) White Sox outfielder Charlie Tilson's hamstring injury is as bad as it gets.

The 23-year-old Tilson needs surgery and will be out for the season after tearing his left hamstring Tuesday in a loss at Detroit in his MLB debut, according to multiple reports. The surgery is set to take place Thursday.

Tilson singled in his first big league at-bat. Then in the fifth inning while tracking down a fly ball, he tore his hamstring.

The White Sox just acquired the speedy Tilson, a Wilmette native, in a trade with the Cardinals on Sunday. Their plan had been for him to be their regular center fielder in the final two months of the season.

Now, their will be no evaluation of Tilson until next season.

Tilson hit .282 with four homers, 34 RBIs, 15 stolen bases and a .753 OPS in 100 games this season at Triple-A Memphis in the Cardinals organization.

Earlier Wednesday, the White Sox recalled outfielder J.B. Shuck to take Tilson's place.
