What Did Ozzie Know?
by Dan Bernstein
Something strange happened before Bobby Jenks even threw his first pitch in yesterday's inexcusable conflagration. As Jenks finished his warmups, Ozzie Guillen began gesticulating to his coaches and a call was placed from the dugout phone to the bullpen.
Immediately, both Scott Linebrink and J.J. Putz began getting loose in a hurry. So what happened -- did somebody see something during his warmup pitches, either in the bullpen or on the mound? Or was there just no confidence in Jenks at all? Regardless, the meltdown occurred too quickly for the backup plan to take effect, and it became depressing mop-up instead. But something was going on that appeared out of the ordinary.
Gordon Beckham was plain awful, and deserves 1A goat status for his 0-5 day that included missed chances to render Jenks' appearance unnecessary. This Sox team executes no aspect of the game reliably.
Explain to me the point again of demoting Carlos Zambrano to be your primary setup man when you don't go to him at a key point in the seventh inning in a game you need to win to avoid a 1-5 road trip. I'll wait for a response that makes sense, and don't tell me he can't pitch on consecutive days. If he can't, he should be starting.
The Starlin Castro Experience makes its Wrigley debut tonight with rain in the forecast, but the wind blowing out to left.
Vancouver only postponed the inevitable with a disciplined win at the United Center, so don't bother with any overdramatic hand-wringing. And let's not think about the Sami Salo injury, please. Oof.
